This is a mix is for my very beloved-bay-area-burningman camp, Laughing Monkey. I motivated to trek out to the playa all the way from New York this year. All of venturing to the Playa have hours and hours to fly, drive, swim and cartwheel out to Nevada. I made this for our journey. I had the best time playing The People party in Oakland. I love the crew to no end. I’d have a hard time finding a party I like better. I can’t say enough good things about the crowd, good energy and amazing dancers. Playing there is the beez kneesl. I promised some folks that I would post up a recording of my live mix. Once upon a time, I was given a track called “Somberosie”. The song had the most enchanting combination of melodies, electronic elements and dub vibe. But registers in at a higher tempo. It hit my sensibilities in a unique way. It was in my head all the time. I played it for dj friends asking if they had anything like it? There answer was always no.  My hunt for similar tracks turned into my putting together this mix.

THE FIRST SET I EVER PLAYED AT COACHELLA, went something like this Lovestep mix. It was that window of time, a year before Dubstep hit the masses [the next Coachella] and slid down the slippery slope to Brostep. This is a postcard from the edge, my foray into Dubstep with a soulish side. Dubstep isn’t for everybody.. and I don’t pretend that this mix represents the entire genre. It is, like all of my mixes.. a carefully selected percentage of the genre that speaks to me to me specifically. I mended a broken heart putting this one together.

This is my first, and perhaps one of my most universally-loved mix. I’ve popped into cocktail parties, brunches, thanksgiving and graduation parties (with 3 generations gathered ’round) and found parents and friends playing this mix. I call it my Sunday-pancake-making mix, because it seems perfect for that occasion too. After visiting Brasil several times, a client in California asked me to dj his backyard party with a soundscape of electronic, latin and bossa music. I had such a lovely time playing I recorded a mix with the crate.
