Thanks to Global Inheritance for inviting me to come play on the Polo field two years in a row. I treated them to a break from the crazy adrenaline-filled, throat-grabbing sets that were so popular this year.
Sunset always demands something special. So I picked out lots of sexy cutting-edge bass music.
And since I got to be there all three days this year, I have to report back on the best performances. My awards go to: Joy Orbison, Ellie Goulding, Francis and the Lights and Sleigh Bells.. who absolutely kicked ass, hands down.
Happy to play with the homies DJ Wonway, DJ Tara and Fam-a-lam Deephunk at the beautiful summertime ritual gathering of cool folks from the Bay and BK. Not that kind of party where everyone is too cool to dance and watching the door for who comes in. Rainbow shades of all folks are knee-deep in beats.
Truly, this party is hella cool and one of my favorites.
Once upon a time, I was given a track called “Somberosie”. The song had the most enchanting combination of melodies, electronic elements and dub vibe. But registers in at a higher tempo. It hit my sensibilities in a unique way. It was in my head all the time. I played it for dj friends asking if they had anything like it? There answer was always no. My hunt for similar tracks turned into my putting together this mix.
THE FIRST SET I EVER PLAYED AT COACHELLA, went something like this Lovestep mix. It was that window of time, a year before Dubstep hit the masses [the next Coachella] and slid down the slippery slope to Brostep. This is a postcard from the edge, my foray into Dubstep with a soulish side. Dubstep isn’t for everybody.. and I don’t pretend that this mix represents the entire genre. It is, like all of my mixes.. a carefully selected percentage of the genre that speaks to me to me specifically. I mended a broken heart putting this one together.

Nicacelly asked me to put together the newest mix for her Summer ’09 line. I do some crazy mixes but this, by far is the most eclectic + global concoction to date. Workout jammy alert! The inspiration for this 125bpm mix came from a the Music Machine night I dj’d in the Bay with the Bangerz crew. They have this night called “Turbo” where djs spin 115+ bpm without genre boundaries. I borrowed that idea and turned it up a few notches.

This is my first, and perhaps one of my most universally-loved mix. I’ve popped into cocktail parties, brunches, thanksgiving and graduation parties (with 3 generations gathered ’round) and found parents and friends playing this mix. I call it my Sunday-pancake-making mix, because it seems perfect for that occasion too. After visiting Brasil several times, a client in California asked me to dj his backyard party with a soundscape of electronic, latin and bossa music. I had such a lovely time playing I recorded a mix with the crate.
