Silent Disco at SxSW | ENCHANTED FOREST

MAR
17

Coming UP! Saturday, March 17th

It puts a smile on my face every time I think about silent discos. I still have to explain to people what they are. [djs transmitting to a wireless-headphoned audience, no out-loud music at all, not even a monitor for us.]

And then I have to explain the MAGIC of silent discos. There is this psychological switch that flips in us when we put on headphones. Call it a buffer, a bubble, a forcefield, private mental-space.. whichever you want. All I know is that people free up at silent discos with headphones on. And oddly enough, they connect with other dancers on the dancefloor. It’s some sort of automatic inhibitor destroyer. It’s awesome. Oh, it’s also a clever loophole on gathering to dance in public without sound amplification permits. We know by now, I love this sort of mischief. By MoPo’s description of his silent disco, I’m honored and excited to get in on the fun & magic.

 MoPo of SunsetSF/Silent Frisco says:

“Unlike the majority of SXSW events, the Silent Southby is NOT sponsor driven or a big budget operation. It’s a BYOB space and a decidedly PURE MUSIC EXPERIENCE. The Dj’s who performed for us last year said, without exception, that this was the favorite event that they played during SXSW.

Austin Enchanted Forest is an arts community, populated by large-scale production artists. For Silent Southby 2011, they built the DJ booth out of deadwood under a huge oak tree.

Who will be under that tree, on the decks at Silent Southby? The daring ones! Musically, Silent Disco as a concept favors your more bold, creative, experimental, and fun party Djs.”

Soultronica hits 3000 listeners. I remember when I couldn’t get booked to play the sexy bass music I wanted to play.. (or rather, put on an opening slot because of it). And that was only 4 years ago. I’m glad the tides are changing in my favor. Super stoked on the reception of the mix that OKP put out for me. People from Japan to Germany have reached out and said hello. That is hella SUGOI!!! (cool! in Japanese). I’m getting the hang of how blogging mixes works and how everyone puts their own spin on what they are posting. This intro from The Upper Cloud just tickled me soooo. I had to share.

“It’s Valentine’s Day eve (V-day by the time you might read this), and typically I’d be compiling a soundtrack to get in the mood. Or simply enter “Musiq Soulchild” and “Tevin Campbell” into my pandora app. Today, I lucked out when I browsed to one of my daily reads, www.Okayplayer.com which posted and led me to someone named DJ Eko. Praising her skills, music choice, and postings in the past, Okayplayer elected this mix for release on their Mixtape Mondays. Three tracks in I hear the The Weeknd, followed up by No Summer4U….Game over..I had to download the mix and immediately put it onto my phone. If the rest of it is half as dope as I’ve already experienced I know I am going to love it.

The mix is called Soultronica Vol. 1. A mix of Soul and Electronica that is so timely done and wisely chosen, it really does give a totally new spin on your typically Valentine’s Day mix that you would expect. Of course, it would be good for any day this 2012.” – UpperCloud

Skinny Ms magazine liked my Turbo Yum mix for workouts so much, they asked me to put together a playlist for cooking healty food in the kitchen. I picked out a rad playlist to sing and dance around the kitchen. xo

“We found DJ Eko this 4th of July via her super pumped up Electro Yum mix. Hopping online and visiting her website we learned that she has DJ’d for Beyonce and was featured in Martha Stewart Magazine [how to find real djs for weddings]. DJ Eko generally globe trots, splitting her time between NYC and the West Coast. Seeing her vast catalogue of mixes and the fact she plays everything from yoga classes to Coachella, we figured she could curate an amazing list of special goodies as a soundtrack to inspire all of our readers in the kitchen. So, while you pull out the veggies to chop and cut, slice and dice, here are DJ eko’s soulful, upbeat tunes for a good long session of cooking and grooving in the kitchen.

If you want more tunes for Sunday pancake-making sessions or cocktail hour, hightail it over to her sunny downtempo mix entitled, Sol Du Brasil. If you need to burn all of the nom-nom calories off, hit Electro Yum – Turbo for an awesome gym workout soundtrack.”

This is a mix is for my very beloved-bay-area-burningman camp, Laughing Monkey. I motivated to trek out to the playa all the way from New York this year. All of venturing to the Playa have hours and hours to fly, drive, swim and cartwheel out to Nevada. I made this for our journey. There are epic moments and quiet moments transmitted via soultronica + future bass music. I really hope you dig it. Put it on when you hit Gerlach! Much love,
♥e

I had the best time playing The People party in Oakland. I love the crew to no end. I’d have a hard time finding a party I like better. I can’t say enough good things about the crowd, good energy and amazing dancers. Playing there is the beez kneesl. I promised some folks that I would post up a recording of my live mix. So, here it is. Soulful House I really like.

The Paleta party at Bembe NYC

The Paleta party at Bembe has been such good mojo. Collaborating with CumbaMela, DJ Panamami, Wonway, Chief Boima & Geko Jones has been too fun.  To celebrate, I’m posting the tropical radio show I did on EVR this summer around the Latin Alternative Music Conference. Lots of people aren’t familiar with my tropical-latin-digitaldancehall-african steeze. So here’s a little sample for ya.  You will find a jumble of Afro+latin music with a progressive, electronic flair. Enjoy it before the glorious summer days are done.
